Seal of Ottaviano, abbot of Saint Andrew in Flumine. Italy, Lazio, 14th c. Bronze, dark patina. 61 x 38 mm. Mandorla matrix; tapered diametrical edge, almost vertical bulge. Tiered field in fess: 1) the Virgin at half body, holding the Child Jesus on her senestral arm, and accosted by two six-pointed stars. 2) two haloed saints, standing; the senestral one facing a dragon placed between two to whom he is holding hands; the dexter holds a cross. 3) an abbot, kneeling, wearing a mitre with long baleen plates, joins his hands and raises his gaze to the scene above; he is flanked by two similar shields bearing a griffin. Legend in orle between two nets; in Roman capitals: + S' o FRATRIS o OCTABIANI o ABBATIS o S o ANDR o IFLVMIE Hooked to the senestral part of the legend, resulting in the partial loss of a letter. Very beautiful composition. The Abbey of Sant'Andrea in Flumine, currently in the municipality of Ponzano Romano, in Lazio. Ref.: Moulded in the National Archives, reference number ST8760.
