Seal of Bartholomew, canon of Mussy. Diocese of Langres, 13th-14th c. Copper alloy with dark patina. 43 x 26 mm. Mandorla matrix; tapered diametrical edge, pertuated top bulge. Field: Saint Barthélémy, standing, turned to senestra, his head haloed, dressed in a long pleated robe, holds in his senestra the skinning knife (instrument of his martyrdom), which he points at with his other hand; it is accosted by two fleurs-de-lis. Legend in orle, between two grènetis; in gothic capitals: + S: DN~I o BARTHOLOMEI o CANONICI o DE o MVIXEIO Beautiful engraving. Cracks caused by a beginning of twisting on the lower left quarter of the matrix. Provenance: Guillaumot 1971. Ref.: Moulding in the National Archives, reference number ST6432. The chapter of Mussy l'Evêque (now Mussy sur Seine) was founded in 1218 by Guillaume de Joinville, bishop of Langres.
