Seal of Sainte Marie de Vau*** (Vaudencourt?). Northern France, 14th c. Yellow copper alloy; cleaned, without patina. 54 x 35 mm. Mandorla matrix; tapered diametrical edge, pertuated top bulge. Field: above a three-wave median cloud whose two extremes are surmounted by a pyramidal bell tower, a hand coming from sénestre holds two keys; below, at sénestre, a tonsured man dressed in a robe (monk, cleric or scribe?), seated on a chair, holds a book or scroll above a lectern, which is attached to the dexter of a double-flowered scroll. Legend in orle between two crenulations; in capitals: + S' BEATE MARIE DEVAVDE D\\\~ ENCORT The legend is problematic: an abbreviated sign on the last E of BEATE; two high commas surmounted by the same abbreviated sign, in the last word. Deep engraving.
