Seal (fragmentary) of Stephen, priest. France, 13th c. - Lot 66
Seal (fragmentary) of Stephen, priest. France, 13th c. Bronze, dark patina. 25 (without the ring) x 27 mm (formerly the matrix was about 50 mm long). Matrix (fragmentary: upper half), formerly in mandorla; ring in bélière. Field: in a circle, a cross pattée, with the letters A and (***here put reversed omega***) at the foot; topped by an eight-pointed star. Legend in orle, between two fillets; in capitals: + : S : STHI o ... /// ... ERDOTIS : Matrix broken, as usual, at the death of its owner. It retains very clearly the marks of its destruction: the person who destroyed it placed it face down (the slightly protruding ring prevented the matrix from lying flat on his back); with the help of a tool, probably a chisel, 4 mm wide, he struck six times which broke the matrix in the middle. It is rare to find matrices that bear the stigma of their beautiful death.
