Pendant or harness pendant, made of gilded copper alloy. - Lot 69
Pendant or harness pendant, made of gilded copper alloy. France, 14th-16th c. Circular body with slightly convex openwork; suspension ring. Dimensions: disc: diameter 42 mm; ring: diameter 9 mm. The hammered surface of the gilded metal bears a finely incised decoration. Worn gilding; traces of oxidation on the reverse. Circular openwork body: a fleur-de-lis with a nourished foot, inscribed in a circle incised with a wolftooth motif. Dating: the very round shape of the fleur-de-lis with a nourished foot, openwork, ending in volutes, and with three swollen petals linked by a ring, evokes the 14th or 15th century; this heraldic motif can be compared to the fleurs-de-lis that adorned the art objects intended for the European courts around 1400, as seen on the fleur-de-lis shields painted in the Gelre Armorial. This metal disc with heraldic decoration was probably hung from a horse's harness.
