Medal in the effigy of Charles V, Emperor of the Romans, Kin - Lot 70
Medal in the effigy of Charles V, Emperor of the Romans, King of Spain. From Hans Reinhart the Elder, 1537, in gilded copper alloy. Ancient cast iron (16th or 17th c.). Medal in gilt copper alloy; dated on the obverse; signed on the reverse; circular piercing in the axis at 12 o'clock, with two linked rings. Dimensions: diameter: 67 mm; thickness: 4 mm. The cast iron has a fairly high (about 3 mm) and finely detailed relief; floral motif incised in the gilding on the obverse. Antique gold patina (bubbles), traces of wear. Obverse: bust of Charles V, aged 37, with his face turned to the right in profile, wearing a beret, wearing a rich costume with the necklace of the Order of the Golden Fleece, holding the crucigerous orb and sceptre. Legend circumscribed between two nets: CAROLVS V DEI GRATIA ROMAN(orum) IMPERATOR SEMPER AVGVSTVS REX HIS(paniarum) SAL(utis) MDXXXVII AETATIS SVAE XXXVII. The sceptre bites lightly on the legend. A flower in the natural is engraved on the golden field between the imperial profile and the sceptre. Reverse: large heritage arms of Charles V (Leon, Castile, Aragon, Sicily, Granada, Austria, Burgundy, Touraine, Brabant); the shield, surrounded by the collar of the Golden Fleece, is placed on the large double-headed imperial eagle crowned with a crown; in the background, the two pillars of Hercules are seen, each bearing a word of the motto PLVS // OVLTRE. Initials of the medallist and goldsmith Hans Reinhart the Elder (died 1581), at the bottom: H. // R. Dating: the quality of the relief, the presence of bubbles in the gilding and the axial piercing suggest an ancient cast iron. The size and engraving of this medal bring it closer to two examples in the hand of Hans Reinhart, the silver-gilt one from the Victoria and Albert Museum (diam. 67 mm) and the silver one from the former Kress collection (diam. 64 cm), with a fixed ring engraved on either side of the profile G G.
