Cruciferous matrix & counter-matrix, in light stone. - Lot 71
Cruciferous matrix & counter-matrix, in light stone. Mediterranean basin, 5th - 7th c. Circular main matrix; slightly flared parallelepipedal socket; counter-matrix on the outside of the socket; drill hole drilled with a drill bit and crossing the socket in the width direction. Dimensions: matrix: diameter 8 cm; height: 6 cm; flank thickness: 2 cm; grip height: 3.5 cm; counter-matrix: 4.5 x 3.5 cm. The engraving is fairly deep (about 2 mm); the indentations show the trace of an incisal tool. Secular, slightly dark patina. Circular main matrix: a Latin cross whose branches end in diamond points, surrounded by foliage in which a large A seems to stand out, in senestral, in a circular net with a large crenellated area. Rectangular counter-matrix: same Latin cross, surrounded by foliage, in a double rectangular net. Dating: the shape of the cross in its scrolls and the possible presence of an A (the natural counterpart of an Omega) evoke the 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th centuries; these motifs can be compared to those left to us by Visigothic art, particularly in the numismatic, furniture or monumental decoration of the Visigothic kingdom or, more broadly, the Mediterranean basin. This double matrix was probably used to mark the bread intended for the Eucharist.
