Gaston LE BOURGEOIS (1880 - circa 1956) Ostrich (counterpart of "Bélier") Soft stoneware of the national manufacture of Sèvres, Old proof by "Sèvres manufacture nationale France" Made in 1928, Five proofs made between 1928 and 1930, Monogram of the modeler "VR", Stamp "Made in France", Mark "S. 1928 G", 49x 104 x 40.5 cm. Firing crack on the head and on the right side of the body and terrace Restorations Notes : After being noticed at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs, by the famous couturier Jacques Doucet, Gaston Le Bourgeois participated in 1925 at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts for the decoration of the Pavilion of the Manufacture de Sèvres. He created two stoneware ostriches to frame the fountain by sculptor Henri Bouchard, which were so successful that the Manufacture decided to buy back the rights in 1926. Only five other examples of these sculptures were made between 1928 and 1930, due to the technical difficulties involved in making such large pieces.
