Paper, plaster and brass parquet GLOBE CELESTE mounted on a turned wooden stand. All the main constellations and the hour scale are shown at the top. Cartouche reads "CARY'S New and Improved CELESTIAL GLOBE, on which is carefully laid down the whole of the STARS and NEBULAE, Contained in the ASTRONOMICAL CATALOGUE of the Revd Mr WOLLASTON.F.R.S. Compiled from the Authorities of FLAMSTEED, DE LA CAILLE, HEVELIUS, MAYER, BRADLEY, HERSCHEL, MASKELYNE & c. With an extensive number from the Works of Miss Herschel. The while adapted to the year 1800, and the Limits of each Constellation determined by a Boundary line. LONDON Made & Sold by J&W. Cary N°181 Strand Mar 1 1799." Made in London in 1799. The globe rests on a wrought-wood structure with different diameters. Dimensions: -Diameters of +/- 51 cm (globe) and 68.3 cm (equatorial table) -Heights of +/- 94 cm (equatorial table) and +/- 125 cm (total) (wear and tear) Note: Founded at the end of the 18th century by map publisher John Cary and his brother William, a manufacturer of scientific instruments, J. & W. Cary produced its first globes. Cary manufactured its first globes in 1791 and quickly became one of London's most sought-after and successful globe makers by the end of the century. Their expertise in design and manufacture enabled them to quickly become the benchmark of the English globe production market, which was flourishing at the time due to Britain's naval prowess.
