Animal images are used in the hunt and by warriors (Zuni), also they serve as altar or house guardians. They are efficacious in childbirth when placed under the pillow of the parturient women (Sia); and a doctor would leave an animal image to look after his patient who places it under his clothes (Cochiti). A death in the household is announced at San Juan to the family's animal guardian, and this image may be placed in the bath of the newborn infant. At Laguna the animal images were said to have been kept by the clan chiefs, but those I saw were being keot by an old woman who would not sell them without the consent of her brotherin-law who lived with her and "might need them hunting". My Hopi hostess also kept an animal hçuosehold guardian which she inherited from her mother. CLEWS PARSONS Elsie, Pueblo Idian Religion, p.335
