VANDALES GELIMER 530-534 DN REX GEI IMIR. Its bust diademed and draped on the right. Laurel wreath around the edge. R/. In a laurel wreath + DN and L lying down. BMC Vandals 2 Silver denier struck in Carthage. Very rare. Chip burst when struck. Black patina. Very beautiful Gélimer or Geilamir is the last king of the Vandals and Alains, from June 530 to March 534. He became ruler of the Vandal kingdom after deposing his pro-Byzantine first cousin, Hilderic, who irritated the Vandal nobility by converting to Catholicism, because most Vandals at that time were fiercely devoted to Arianism, despite the protests of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian. In June 533, Justinian sent an expeditionary force commanded by Belisarius to restore Hilderic to the Vandal throne. On September 5, 533, following tactical errors by his commanders, the Byzantines commanded by Belisarius landed in Carthage and defeated Gélimer's army at Ad Decimum, near Carthage, and then occupied the city. Gélimer was then decisively defeated on December 15, 533 at Tricaméron. He fled to a mountain at the border of Numidia, the Mons Pappua. Put under blockade, he is forced to surrender in March 534. The Vandal kingdom is destroyed and the Roman authority partially returns to Africa. After his defeat, Gélimer was sent to Constantinople and Justinian offered him an estate in Galatia.
