Seal of Raoul de Mémont, clerk. France, 13th-14th c. - Lot 60
Seal of Raoul de Mémont, clerk. France, 13th-14th c. Bronze, dark patina. 34 x 26 mm. Matrix in rounded shield; tapered diametrical edge, pertualised top bulge. Field: a lamp suspended from a pole by a ring with four attachments (three visible); towards which an insect arrives. Legend in orle between two nets; in Gothic capitals: + S/ RADVLPHI o DE o MEMONTECL'I Very interesting representation, both by the uniqueness of its theme (an insect coming to burn itself at a lamp) and by the graphic genius of the engraver who pushed it to signify the upward movement of the insect by a sort of symbolic wake left in space. Tourments de l'amour **** The first biographer of Saint Louis, King of France, was a cleric by the name of Guillaume de Mémont. Provenance: Maison Guillaumot, 1971. Vente Libert 2008, n° 31.
