Anthropomorphic VASE representing an ACROBATE - Lot 2
Anthropomorphic VASE representing an ACROBATE The theme of the acrobat, although rare, is present from the preclassic period in the Tlatilco and Olmec cultures. It probably represents a shaman performing a ritual. It is known that singing, dancing and the absorption of hallucinogenic substances allowed access to trance. Here the ceremonial vase takes the form of a figure performing a back bridge, the feet and hands serving as a support for the vase. He wears a belt made of tubular elements. The opening of the vase is placed on his belly. Brown and red slip terracotta with traces of manganese oxide. Colima Culture, Mexico, 100 BC - 250 AD H. 24.5 - W. 34 - W. 22 cm. Rayures au col. Provenance: Former collection of M. Alain Bosquet, Paris. Acquired in the 1970s - 1980s Bibliography for a similar object: Evan Mauer and Molly Hennen, Symboles sacrés, quatre mille ans d'art des Amériques, Exhibition at the Musée de Montpellier from July 17 to September 29, 2002, RMN, p. 40, n°53.
