CEREMONIAL HACHA with human face - Lot 3
CEREMONIAL HACHA with human face The very expressive face is treated with prominent volumes: full cheeks, fleshy mouth with a style of drooping corners reminiscent of Olmec features, the nose is aquiline and the eyebrows protruding. The eyes are closed. A protuberance marked with a cross indicates the junction between the root of the nose and the eyebrows. A cap encloses the head and consists of a central domed crest, ending at the back with a fan. The back is flat with a protruding part at the top serving as a tenon. The typology of this piece places it early in the art of Veracruz. Grey volcanic stone with brown patina. Culture Veracruz, Mexico, 300 - 500 AD H. 19 - l. 15 - Ep. 14 cm Provenance: Former collection of Mr. Alain Bosquet, Paris. Acquired in the 1970s - 1980s Bibliography for a similar object: Elisabeth Kennedy Easby and John Frederik Scott, Before Cortés, Sculpture of Middle America, Exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, September 30, 1970 - January 3, 1971, no. 147.
