VOMITIVE SPATULA with the effigy of the deity Zemi - Lot 34
VOMITIVE SPATULA with the effigy of the deity Zemi This curved spatula is in two parts: the lower area left smooth, used to induce vomiting of purification for the ritual of cohoba, and the upper part sculpted, used as a handle for gripping. The latter is carved with a figure of Zemi in a curled up position. This male divinity, represented with an erect sex, is here to be related to the notion of fertility but also to a cyclical vision of the universe where life and death form a whole. He is adorned with biceps bracelets, circular earrings and an engraved truncated cone headdress. Its back reveals vertebrae and thigh bones, which are reminiscent of the morphology of a batrachian, an animal linked to the idea of nature's fertility. An engraved band of scrolls delimits the two parts. Bones with a brown patina. Taino culture, Dominican Republic, 800 - 1500 AD.C. H. 25 - l. 4,4 - Ep. 2 cm Provenance: Private collection since the 1950-1960s, France. A summary report from the MSMAP laboratory, produced in November 2017, will be given to the purchaser.
