VOMITIVE SPATULA in the effigy of the Zemi deity - Lot 240
VOMITIVE SPATULA in the effigy of the Zemi deity in bone with brown patina. Curved in shape, this spatula is organized in two parts: the lower part is left smooth, used to induce vomiting for purification during the cohoba ritual, and the upper part is carved and used as a grip. The latter is carved with a figure of Zemi, in a crouched position. This male deity, represented with an erect sex, is here related to the notion of fertility but also to a cyclical vision of the universe where life and death form a whole. He is adorned with bicep bracelets, circular earrings and an engraved truncated cone-shaped headdress. His back reveals vertebrae and thigh bones, which are reminiscent of the morphology of a batrachian, an animal associated with the idea of fertility in nature. A band engraved with scrolls delimits the two parts. Taino culture, Dominican Republic, 800 - 1500 AD. H. 25 - l. 4,4 - Th. 2 cm Provenance : Private collection since the 1950s-1960s, France. A synthesis report of the MSMAP laboratory carried out in November 2017 will be given to the buyer.
