Gaston LE BOURGEOIS (1880 - circa 1956) Ostrich (counterpart of "Bélier") Soft stoneware of the national manufacture of Sèvres, Old proof by "Sèvres manufacture nationale France" Made in 1928, Stamp, model acquired by the State in 1926, five proofs manufactured between 1928 and 1930, Marked "A" letter date for 1928, Monogram of the modeler "RR". 50 x 105 x 41.5 cm Firing crack on the left side of the body. After being noticed at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs, by the famous couturier Jacques Doucet, Gaston Le Bourgeois participated in 1925 in the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts for the decoration of the Pavilion of the Manufacture de Sèvres. He created two stoneware ostriches to frame the fountain by sculptor Henri Bouchard, which were so successful that the Manufacture decided to buy back the rights in 1926. Only five other examples of these sculptures were made between 1928 and 1930, due to the technical difficulties involved in making such large pieces.
