Set of 112 plates of costumes from around the world, taken f - Lot 553
Set of 112 plates of costumes from around the world, taken from Auguste Wahlen's Usages et costumes de tous les peuples du Monde.
S.l.n.d. (Bruxelles, 1843-1844)
Large in-8°, title - 112 gummed watercolor plates, protected by their serpents, table in Italian (title and table pages slightly damaged).
Bound in contemporary half vellum, orange title page, spine decorated with romantic gilt motifs.
Set of 112 (of 210) plates from Wahlen's magnificent 1843-1844 descriptive collection of the world's costumes. According to Quérard (III 990), Wahlen was the pseudonym of Jean-François-Nicolas Loumyer.
Our copy is unusual in that it was bound for an Italian collector, who used two plates printed with a gilt-engraved period frame as title and table pages, which he or she then supplemented with a handwritten text in Italian.
