FRENCH SCHOOL circa 1700, after Nicolas COLOMBEL (1644-1717) Portrait of Emmanuel de Coulanges (1633-1716), epistolier and chansonnier in Carnival costume Oak panel, not parqueted Dimensions: 32.7 x 22.7 cm Numbered 204 on reverse (Minor wear and abrasions) Related works : Other versions of this composition are known, cited in the exhibition catalog "Nicolas Colombel, vers 1644-1717", Musée des beaux-arts de Rouen, 2012-2013, pages 184 to 187, P54 to P57 : - Oil on canvas at Musée Carnavalet, Paris (38 x 33 cm) - Oil on canvas at Château de Grignan (35.5 x 27.4 cm) - Panel at Château de Carrouges (32 x 25 cm) Emmanuel de Coulanges, cousin of Mme de Sévigné, gave up his position as councillor at the Paris parliament to become a chansonnier. In 1690, he accompanied the Duc de Chaulnes on his embassy to Rome. It was then that Nicolas Colombel painted his portrait. The Hungarian costume had been lent to him by the Prince de Turenne.
