Jules CHARDIGNY (British, 1842-1892) (attributed to) Portrait of a Great Dane - Tom Oil on panel Monogrammed lower right JC Inscribed "Thomas Couture" on the back Dimensions: 22 x 15.5 cm (Minor wear) Son of sculptor and medalist Pierre Joseph Chardigny, Jules Chardigny first learned from his father in his London studio, and later became a pupil of Thomas Couture. He began exhibiting in 1864, taking part in the Salon for the last time in 1885. Also a sculptor, he produced busts of leading figures of the day, such as the playwright Alexis Bouvier, exhibited at the Salon in 1872, and the Bouffes Parisiennes tenor Alfred Jolly in 1978.
