PASCAL Blaise, Les Pensées. Paris, Desprez, 1670. 1 vol. in- - Lot 66

PASCAL Blaise, Les Pensées. Paris, Desprez, 1670. 1 vol. in-12, 39 ffnch - 348 pp - 10 ff. Bound in full brown calf, 5-ribbed spine decorated with fleurons (binding very damaged, jaws cracked, caps faded). Third official edition of Pascal's Pensées, published in the same year as the original. Although the title reads "Seconde édition", this is a first state of the third edition (printed in 1671), the true second edition (in 358 pp. miscalculated 334) being unmarked on the title. This is not a forgery, as Tchemerzine indicates, but an official edition from the presses of Guillaume Desprez, whose typographic equipment is clearly recognizable. Tchemerzine-Scheler V, 72; Rochebilière, 1122; Rochebilière describes two states of this edition. Copy of the second printing, with the error "grand" corrected on page 306.
