Rare KACHINA POOKONHOYA or TWIN WAR DIVINITY - Lot 14
Rare KACHINA POOKONHOYA or TWIN WAR DIVINITY Cottonwood, pigments and leather Hopi, Arizona, Southwestern United States of America circa 1900 Height: 21.5 cm (wear) POOKONHOYA is not a kachina but one of two twin deities. They are warriors, grandsons of the spider woman. They mock people and play tricks on them. However, in times of need, they help the people with the advice of their grandmother. Colton describes it as CD 10, in a very different way, but admitting that other representations exist. Barton Wright reproduces a tihu similar to the one shown, which was part of the Fred Harvey Collection and supplied by Henri Voth (cf Hopi Material Culture, Artifacts Gathered by H R Voth in the Fred Harvey Collection, Heard Museum 1979, page 113). Its nudity makes it possible to date it before the 1900s, when the modesty of the "Anglos" led to an evolution in kachina carving.
