Traditionally, bannerstones are thought of as spear counterweights, or drill counterweights. Their primitive use led them to evolve from a utilitarian object to a ritual object or even a protective amulet for hunting. It is assumed that they became objects of exchange between social groups. They are thought to have been produced between 3200 BC and 1000 BC in the eastern USA.
