RARE MORTIER - Lot 51
RARE MORTIER Whale vertebra Whale vertebra from which the two transverse parts have been removed. It is sculpted with a zoomorphic figure, stylized on the body of the vertebra which constitutes the grinding vessel, having first been hollowed out. Carved decoration also adorns the spiny process. The animal bears large, sharp teeth, making it aggressive. Note that the material is left rough. Haida, Northwestern United States 19th century Height: 25.5 cm; Length: 50 cm.
