Full-length portrait of Tsar Peter I of Russia in the uniform of the Preobrazhensky Guard Regiment
Bronze with bronze patina

Mark Matveyevich Antokolski, born on October 21, 1840 in Wilno, then in Imperial Russia, and died on July 9, 1902 in Bad Homburg near Frankfurt, was a sculptor admired for the psychological complexity of his historical works and famous in his homeland.
This statuette is a scaled-down version of the famous statue of the Tsar installed in Taganrog, the port city he founded in 1698. Commissioned in 1898 and erected here in 1903, it is the only bronze statue of Peter the Great in Russia to date to have come from the hands of its creator. The original plaster cast of this work, presented at the first Moscow Polytechnic Exhibition to celebrate Peter the Great's bicentenary, is now in the museum of the Russian Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg.
