Jean Royère 1902 - 1981 Armchair "Elephant"... - Lot 45 - Eve
Jean Royère 1902 - 1981 Armchair "Elephant" (Eléphanteau) 88 x 68 x 63 cm Provenance : Private collection in Paris, bought from Royère, around 1954, by the parents of the present owner Bibliography : Jean Royère, Pierre Emmanuel Martin Vivier, ed Norma 2002. Model reproduced on pages 220, 221, 222. Pages 224 and 225 show watercolor projects of the interior including the model. Page 269 shows a 1964 photograph of a small Parisian salon with two Elephants. This model created in 1939 unveiled at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs, it is also presented at the exhibition "From idea to form" organized by the association Porza at the Palais Galliera in Paris. Royère takes this model in 1951, and in addition adapts it to form a sofa. Pierre Emmanuel Martin Vivier, in his monograph on Royère, writes about this model: "the shape of the Elephant is thought as a whole. Royère draws this seat, which rests on small feet of conical form, of only one line following the movement of an undulation which would have been released in space". "The Elephanteau knows in the 50's a slightly different version with shorter ears where the perfect regularity of the undulations balances the chair at best."
