TOP HAT - Lot 91
TOP HAT Kiowa, Wichita, Kansas USA, 1865 - 1870 Fake beaver skin, beads, buttons H.: 19.5 cm It has an inner label that reads: "COR.BANK & COURT - STS, NEW LONDON, T.M. LYON ", this company ceased its activity in 1870. This hat obviously belonged to an Indian of a certain rank, possibly a warrior with recognized exploits, as the ornaments seem to suggest warlike facts. Symbolizing the four directions, the hat features a large brass concho on the front and brass buttons on the sides and back. The buttons on the sides are adorned with beaded pendants finished with Union Army uniform buttons (bearing the inscription "Horstmann, Philadelphia"); on the right are "Red White Heart" and Venetian "French Cross" beads; on the left are cobalt-blue beads and a Venetian cylindrical "Eye Bead"; the back button is adorned with a ribbon. The hat brim is adorned with a beaded band in the absolutely typical Kiowa (or perhaps Kiowa-Apache) colours and patterns, which skilfully combines pearls of different calibres, something common before the reserve period.
